Does Cold Laser Therapy For Arthritis Work?

September 21, 2015 By Renee White

cold laser therapy for arthritisCold laser therapy for arthritis? Although that statement sounds like a term out of a sci-fi movie, over the past few years this therapy has not only become a well-recognized chiropractic treatment, it has also become the way patients prefer to be treated for their osteoarthritis pain. Those who suffer with osteoarthritis tend to want to avoid any type of invasive procedures, and cold laser therapy is proving to be an effective treatment.

What Are Cold Lasers?

A cold laser is a non-surgical device that is held in the hand. It is typically used by chiropractors and other medical professionals. This device works by emitting a certain wavelength in the form of light. This light helps to stimulate cell tissue. Once the cells begin to rejuvenate, many benefits are initiated in the affected joint and experienced by the patient. The most common benefit cold laser therapy for arthritis provides is the reduction of inflammation and pain in the joint.

In fact a controlled study revealed that cold laser therapy helped to relieve the pain and swelling associated with osteoarthritis. The study also concluded that range of motion increased in affected joints, especially the knee joint. Complaints of tenderness were also reduced.

Other Benefits of Cold Laser Therapy

Besides reducing inflammation and pain, cold laser therapy can help provide relief to osteoarthritis in other ways. One of the ways the treatment helps those suffering with arthritic knees is by improving cartilage strength in the knee. As the surrounding tissue becomes stronger, the cartilage becomes stronger and therefore not able to become injured or worn down as easily.

However, before the cartilage in the knee become stronger, the body must be able to produce cartilage. Fibroblasts are cells that make up the connective tissue. These cells help with not only wound healing, but also the production of cartilage and the structural framework for other tissues in the body.

Those who are diagnosed with arthritis seek relief from their symptoms. Cold laser therapy for arthritis is a non-invasive treatment that can help patients feel better, reduce the amount of pain and inflammation and improve their quality of life.
