What Is Spinal Decompression And Is It Right For You?

November 14, 2016 By Renee White

what is spinal decompression alpharettaIf you suffer with chronic back pain, you are well aware how this pain can affect your ADLs (Activities of Daily Living). You may be unable to concentrate on anything else except how you can be relieved of the pain. Some patients may have discussed different types of treatment for the pain including surgical and nonsurgical options with their health practitioner, and some of these patients may even wonder what is spinal decompression. However, there are several things that patients should understand so they can make an educated decision about the best therapy for their needs.

What Causes Spinal Decompression?

Spinal decompression is the process of relieving pressure on one or more nerves that have become pinched in the spinal column. This is also known as neural impingement. Therapy is achieved by nonsurgical and surgical means, and treats conditions such as:

  • Herniated discs
  • Disc bulge
  • Sciatica
  • Isthmic spondylolisthesis
  • Spinal stenosis

What Is Non-Surgical Decompression?

When you are wondering what is spinal decompression, you may hear your practitioner mention the term “non-surgical decompression”. This is a motorized traction treatment, and it helps alleviate back pain. The process works by subtly and carefully stretching the spine. The stretch allows the spine to change force and position. Pressure is removed from the spinal disks, which are cushions that separate the bones in the spinal column.

One of the most common types of non-surgical therapy for spinal decompression is inversion therapy. During therapy, patients secured to an inversion table and hang upside down to relieve the pressure and pain. The time of the treatment can last from 10 to 15 minutes, but most patients work slowly to increase their time with the inversion therapy.

Although the therapy has many critics who question its validity, there are advocates that promote it as a safe and effective way to treat back pain without the use of anesthesia or surgery.

What Is Surgical Decompression?

Laminectomy and Microdiscectomy are common procedures for surgical decompression. Microdiscectomy is a minimally invasive procedure and Laminectomy is an invasive procedure.

When considering what is surgical decompression, you must first determine what is causing your chronic back pain. If all other causes have been ruled out, consult with a qualified chiropractor to find the treatment that is best for you.
